Inspect the Interior Surfaces of Cylindrical Aircraft Engine Couplers Components with the New iShot® SeeUV® VIBES (CIS) Coupling Inspection System

InterTest, Inc. of Columbia, NJ is proud to announce its newest addition to the SeeUV® Visual Inspection System Series:  the Coupling Inspection System (CIS). With its high-grade optics, simultaneous white light and UV light capability, the Coupler Inspection System provides crisp video images of part internals during Magnetic Particle and Fluorescent Penetrant Visual Inspections (MP and FPI).  Including precise 3 axis motion control, the all-inclusive CIS makes the inspection process quick, easy, and repeatable. The system is ideal for aircraft engine couplers and other medium size parts requiring routine visual inspection and maintenance.

A high resolution ¼ inch CCD image sensor in combination with 3 interchangeable optical adapters deliver brilliant 470 HTV line color images of part internals on an included 15 inch LED monitor mounted on a swing arm. The CISuses patented interchangeable optical adapters with 45, 60 and 90-degree directions of view to provide the user with a variety of angled views.

Optional 0 and high-magnification 90-degree optical adapters are also available.  Combined with a remote focus feature, the CIS achieves complete coverage of all internal aircraft engine coupler surfaces.

In conjunction with the quality image, the Coupler Inspection System has a unique white and UV illumination capability that permits easy interpretation of indications found during the examination of aircraft component internals.  Independently controlled white and UV illumination allow simultaneous fluorescent and conventional color views, a unique feature that aids in image evaluation.  In Addition, the white and UV illumination is uniform across the field of view with superior spectral content for Magnetic Particle and Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection. All fluids used for these test methods drain effortlessly below the coupler mount into a catch pan with drain plug for simple clean up.

Proper illumination and image quality can be repeated effortlessly with the CIS 3 axis control and encoded positioning. The CIS can adjust horizontal positioning and vertical positioning (insertion) of the camera boom as well as motorized part rotational position. The vertical and horizontal axis provide encoded position readouts to insure 100% coverage.  Motorized options are available for horizontal and vertical positioning. Three part mounts are included with the system for specific aircraft engine couplers.

Barrel Inspection Camera System for Liquid Container’s Concealed Interior

Challenge:  The customer came to us with a specific request to inspect the enclosed interior of 55 Gallon Drums used for mixing fluids.  After the drums have been used they require complete barrel inspection to ensure the interior is free of residue as well as check the integrity of the welded joints. Click Here to see the iShot® Handi Wand
handi wand suspended from ceiling for inspectionThe surface area is relatively large for an inspection with a small area for entrance into the drum. (1-1/4″)  In the past, the customer used video probes, however, increased the length of the inspection considerably due to the smaller field of view as well as lack of light intensity.  The other drawback was in using a video probe, the likelihood of damaging the equipment was increased because they are not robust and are very expensive to repair.

Solution:  The barrel inspection solution was to modify our iShot Handi-wand and ruggedized the connector, so it was able to completely inspect the interior of the dark beverage drum. The customer wanted to keep the tool hanging from the ceiling so it was accessible inline for their process, we incorporated a retractable ceiling mount to obtain easy access to the camera wand.  The monitors are attached to the wall making the Handi-Wand a convenient barrel inspection system that was almost native to there facility, as opposed to a piece of equipment that had to be locked away every evening.  Our engineers altered the shape of our product’s wand section in such a way that the head of the unit could look back on its own handle.  This was necessary so that once the unit went into the drum for inspection it was able to look at the underside of the entrance portal. Along with doing this our engineers changed the camera head of the unit to the OWL camera to increase the light sensitivity due to the dark interior of the beverage drum.

Results:  Our customer is still using the product and has been successful.  The customer has saved nearly 30,000 dollars on every system they have purchased and have been able to continue to do there inspections faster and with less damage than in the past.

Remote Visual Inspection Core Technologies

Core Technologies Within the discipline of RVI, InterTest specializes in video and optical inspection under white, ultraviolet and infrared light. RVI tools allow users to see flaws in hidden and hazardous places off limits to the naked eye. InterTest Opens Opportunities for Innovators to Leverage Sony Block Camera Technology

CHICAGO, Mar. 21, 2011 (Automate 2011, Booth 628)

Sony Electronics announced today that InterTest, Inc, a supplier of specialized vision products, remote visual inspection (RVI) tools, and non-destructive testing (NDT) equipment, will be named an Authorized National Systems Integrator for Sony’s Visual Imaging Products division.

This enhancement to the long-standing relationship between Sony and InterTest is an addition to the existing distribution channel. It is designed to serve an emerging class of entrepreneurial companies bringing new concepts to market integrating Sony block camera with novel applications as diverse as IED remote disposal robots for surveillance and defense applications, helmet cams for sports broadcasting and borescopes for various inspection applications including nuclear and water power generation plants, automotive, air craft and general manufacturing.
